Adopt an Artifact: World War II Landing Ship Tank (LST)

One of a kind scale model of a World War II Landing Ship Tank (LST)

You can adopt this artifact for $1,000.00.

Western Pennsylvania is well known as the site of 2 industrial manufacturing companies who, during World War II, converted their plants into shipbuilding centers for the war effort. Together Dravo and American Bridge corporations produced 264 landing craft. The vessels were key to the Allied effort, bringing men and war materiel to beachheads where they could be put into action.

Each ship had its’ own history and personality. Often, as a token of remembrance, scale models were crafted of particular vessels and presented to those who initially sponsored ships or commanded them. Existing known models show skillful hand craftsmanship with great attention to detail.

Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum owns several different LST models, each within its own custom made glass showcase. One model, recently gifted, had been stored for years in a basement where moist conditions and lack of care caused paint to peel and little string cable lines to snap.

Adopting the model of LST 291 would allow our museum staff to purchase conservation material and dedicate the hours necessary to bring the model back to its’ original condition and ready for display.
