What Is Adopt An Artifact?

Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum has been collecting, preserving, and sharing history with the public since its doors opened in 1910, but did you know that less than 10 percent of the Museum’s artifacts are on exhibit at any one time?  Our collection needs proper storage and care in order to protect and share it with future generations. Adopt An Artifact is a new program that will help protect irreplaceable pieces that tell stories of our past.

Because of an item’s condition at the time of donation, or simply due to the ravages of time, some artifacts are too fragile to exhibit. Your tax-deductible donation to the Adopt an Artifact program will support the restoration and storage of a piece of your choosing and preserve its historical integrity.

Why Should You Participate?

Adopting an artifact is a meaningful way to get involved with the Museum’s collection and help provide the support needed to continue to care for our ever-growing collection. Surprise a friend or loved one by adopting an artifact in his or her honor, or show your pride in Soldiers & Sailors history by adopting one for yourself.

How Does Adopt An Artifact Work?

Visit each page to learn the history of the artifact in need of special attention. Decide which program level works for you. There are two ways to adopt an artifact:

  • Make the maximum donation.
  • Opt to adopt a portion of the artifact of your choice.

In addition to knowing that you are helping to preserve these valuable items, participation in the Adopt An Artifact program entitles you to the following "Benefits of Adoption"

  • Personalized adoption packet which describes your artifact along with its’ historical significance.
  • Society membership for one year- Good for free museum admission and access to membership program rates and museum store discount.
  • Your adopted artifact will be on exhibit for one year together with signage recognizing your donation.

Only through the support of the community can we continue to care for and exhibit artifacts that connect us with the past.

Thank you for helping to preserve our history!
